The Ancient Art of Vastu...

As many of you know, I moved into my first house a few years back. I had owned a couple of loft spaces over the years but I liked the idea of having more outdoor space and our house has almost a half acre of land.

“Houses are hungry,” is what my client Sheryl McLean said and she wasn’t lying.

From the get go this house wanted my attention. It started with an undisclosed leak by the seller in the primary bath, that forced me into a renovation three weeks into homeownership and living in a new city. Next it was a broken HVAC unit and things started to spiral from there.

Forget my plan of fix-ups that I’d written in response to the inspection report during closing, the house had it’s own ideas and things were breaking down accordingly.

Also something strange was happening with painting the rooms. I couldn’t paint them. Even though I’m not a designer, I usually have instincts about color but it seemed that every time I thought I was set, I’d find myself jumbled and coming home with swatches that I had never been interested in before.

As I started to uncover how the house had not been taken care of by the previous owner, who had flipped it post-divorce, a friend of mine suggested I look at Vastu. Vastu Shastra is an ancient Indian system of architecture and design that aligns buildings using directional, geometric and spatial planning principles.

This is an ancient system that races back over 5,000 years and one I am definitely not versed in. But briefly, Vastu utilizes the five elements earth, water, fire, air and either and applies them to north, south, east, west and combinations of those directions by degree. A compass was involved and it was a bit intense finding the center of my home and mapping out the directions by degrees.

But once we did, the house felt immediately better. For example, a couple of minor fixes like taking down curtains in the wrong color in my dining room and moving a chair in my office produced an instant effect.

When I looked at the colors I was supposed to use in certain rooms, it explained why my intuition was firing that the colors I naturally gravitate toward wouldn’t work in certain spaces. I couldn’t get clear because I didn’t have a context for why I would use colors like red or orange in certain areas, colors I’m not naturally drawn to. But the house “knew”. Using what the house was “asking” for has changed the energy in the space completely.

Which brings me to my round-about point about intuition, especially when it comes to changes you want to make in your business. Because the structure you’ve created in your business has a life outside of you. Your business has creative work it’s doing in the world and you are the person assigned with its evolution. Are you aligned with it? Or avoiding it?

You might not be getting the message.

Because the inner guidance you’re hearing is not familiar.

Because it’s not the way that you normally do things.

Because it seems a little “out there” (say spiritual, that might be easier).

That’s the whole point.

If you got quiet, if you settled into the unfamiliar, if you got some help, you would receive the new solutions you need.

Your price is a signal. It's a signal that your Interior Design Brand is a Fit for your ideal client. If you've ever bid on a Dream Project, where you know you sold your services (and yourself) cheap, because you wanted to be the most "affordable" option, because you really wanted the job, but you lost it anyway, that's why. The person on the receiving end wondered, "Is this person new? Do they know what they're doing? Do they not know their value?" Because when you collaborate with somebody...

I was in Los Angeles last week and ended up having a very design-filled couple of days. I visited the gorgeous studio of my recent, private client Haus of Meeshie: HōM in a historic part of Westchester I had never visited in the almost twenty years I lived in LA. Then I visited my client Jill Romine while she installed her owner's suite and bath at the Pasadena Showcase house. (I can't share pictures but the room has a bed and a feeling, you have to see in person when it's open in April.) I...

Historian Bettany Hughes OBE has said that even though women have always made up 50 per cent of the population, they occupy less than 0.5 per cent of recorded history. I wish I could say that estimate surprised me. Ever been to the Louvre? In the 35K objects on display and across roughly 1400 different artists, only 22 are women. Hughes says that even though women were prominently featured in archaeological records visually and in artifacts, they largely disappear once recorded history begins...
